Message: Nick,

I am considering the purchase of a 2 family occupancy house. I want to rent the basement out. It is a completely separate unit with full bath, kitchen, and entrance. You have spoken over the years of your tennant DNK. I would like to hear your thoughts on slum lording.

Message: I am very disappointed that you two haters are leaving The Shire. I guess I'll have to get the age of consent eliminated without your help. Allah Akbar.

Manipulatively yours,

Ian

Message: Dear Andrew,

Now that I have my driver's license, I'm looking for a cheap used first car. The reason it has to be cheap (below $10000) is that I have been spending my money on Puke and The Gang and Freedomainradio subscriptions. I don't know anything about what you call "driving dynamics", but I have listened enough of you (I guess you can be considered my car guru or "curu" if you will) to want a fun car and think it should be small and RWD. At the same time, it has to fit a small assortment of musical instruments in its cargo space and preferably provide at least some means to seat four people. I have parking space for about half a car, so yes, it would have to pull double duty as a fun car and a somewhat daily driver, although it's more like weekly, since I mostly telecommute. I'm willing to forgo heated seats and lane keep assist, but it would be nice to have speakers of some sort.

All this has led me to consider the BMW 1-series hatchbacks, since they weigh about 3000 pounds, are RWD and reasonably practical, don't look like ass and have received some praise for their handling. For now, I'm going with a smaller engine, probably diesel, that has somewhere between 140-160 bhp. I'm looking at one that's particularly cheap (about $5300) and old (13 years) and high mileage (182000 miles), but its production date means it doesn't have an expensive timing chain issue introduced in 2007. There's a link below [1] for the ad with pictures, more information in metric, and a description in both Estonian and Russian. Of course I would have it pre-purchase-inspected if I decide to jump on it, but off the top of your head, what do you think are the chances that this car could be kept running for another 3 years and 36000 miles without spending another $5300 on it? Am I making a huge mistake? Should I be looking at a Mercedes CLK instead?

The other question is, now that I will be one additional shitty driver on the road right in front of you, stalling on the green light and going 15 under, what should I do to get better and are there any tips to avoid pissing other drivers off in the short term?

Kind regards, Johannes
